Press Release - Food for Thought November 20 film addresses racial tolerance
SACRAMENTO - The California State Library’s third event in its new cultural evening series, Food for Thought: Thinking and Talking at the California State Library, will be November 20th. The 5:00 to 8:30 pm event includes free food, wine, and a showing of one of the greatest American films of the 20th century.
Given the November 4 landslide victory of the first African American elected president of the United States, November’s Food for Thought offering, Stanley Kramer’s 1967 Academy Award-winning tour de force starring Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracey, and Sidney Poitier, is uncannily prescient, and sure to spark insightful discussion.
The groundbreaking Kramer film addresses interracial marriage and masterfully debunks racial stereotypes. Kramer later said that the lead actors so believed in the film’s powerful premise they signed the contract before seeing the script. The ailing Spencer Tracy died just 17 days after delivering American cinema’s most wrenching monologue on tolerance.

The California State Library has launched Food for Thought because a healthy democracy, of which libraries are the bedrock, requires that people talk freely about ideas and issues: Food for Thought is a forum for that civilized discourse. While intellectually invigorating, the program also gives audiences time to slow down, to consider and discuss concepts, such as tolerance, that are shaping our collective future.
The evening begins with a wine and appetizer reception sponsored by the California State Library Foundation, and a post- movie, facilitated discussion among audience members regarding the film’s timely message.
Food for Thought will be held from 5:00 to 8:30 pm in historic Room 500 on the 5th floor of the Stanley Mosk Library and Courts Building at 914 Capitol Mall in Sacramento. Doors open at 5:00. The movie shows at 5:45 with time for discussion afterward. Metered parking is free after 6:00 pm and the event is 2 blocks from Light Rail. Space is limited. Attendees must RSVP to akwong@library.ca.gov to ensure a seat.
Food for Thought is made possible by generous donations from the California State Library Foundation. For more information, please contact Angela Kwong at (916) 654-1330 or email at akwong@library.ca.gov.
